Google Reader Google+ Integration of the Day

Google Reader Google+ Integration of the Day: Google has announced some big changes coming to Google Reader, including a brand-new design and Google+ social features.

Because Google+ is about to get many of Reader’s sharing features, Google is moving things like friending, following and shared link blogs over to Google+. If you want to maintain the social network you have on Reader right now, Google recommends creating a Reader-specific circle on Google+.

If you decide to leave Reader altogether because of the change, you’ll be able to export your subscriptions, shared items, friends, like and starred items.

Google hasn’t said exactly when the switchover will occur, but it should happen sometime in the next week.

iPhone 5 Rumor of the Day

iPhone 5 Rumor of the Day: According to one analyst, the eventual release of the iPhone 5 might be a bigger deal than expected, because it’s the last Apple product Steve Jobs was intimately involved in creating.

A source confirmed that information to CNET, saying, “This is a very large project that Steve dedicated all of his time to. He was not that involved in the 4S because his time was limited.”

The phone will reportedly deliver the “complete redesign” Apple fans were anticipating this year, along with a larger display and 4G capabilities.

It’s now expected out in June of next year, around the time of Apple’s Developer Conference.

Seth MacFarlane Star Trek Idea of the Day

Seth MacFarlane Star Trek Idea of the Day: In a Hollywood Reporter cover story, Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane reveals that he’d rather be working on a new Star Trek TV series than making more Family Guy.

He brought up Trek after saying he hoped his most famous series would end “while the show is still strong.”

“I don’t know who would give me the keys to that car,” he said, “But I’d love to see that franchise revived for television in the way that it was in the 1990s: very thoughtful, smartly written stories that transcend the science fiction audience.”

MacFarlane is a huge Trek fan, judging by all the jokes about the franchise on his animated shows, and he’s currently bolstering his space nerd cred by reviving Carl Sagan’s Cosmos with Neil DeGrasse Tyson.

If he somehow got the gig, do you think he could make the next Next Generation?

Make a Storage Capsule Out of Two Plastic Soda BottlesBackpackers often buy small lightweight containers to avoid lugging around full-size bottles of soap, condiments, sunblock, and many other substances. Save some money by making airtight, waterproof, and lightweight containers from the tops of two soda bottles. You’ll probably find a use for these even if you aren’t a backpacker.

Backpacking blogger JJ Mathes details the construction of these containers at the link below. All you basically need to do is cut two plastic soda bottles just past the point where the screw-cap threads end and glue them together. If you want a two compartment capsule, measure and cutout a circular piece of plastic from the bottle’s sidewall.

I especially like the idea of using the two-compartment capsule for salt and pepper or two different daily medications. These would also be great to bring cooking oil, garlic cloves, and other cooking odds and ends when camping; perhaps even a couple of shots of your cordial of choice for a mountaintop toast.
